Prince Historian
DEEP DIVESince 2001, my work has been built on relationships with producers, mix engineers, and labels. Multiple Billboard #1s, Grammy nominations, 1.3+ billion streams, 53 countries. The numbers are nice. The trust behind them is what I'm actually proud of.
My path with music and sound is shaped by chromesthesia, a form of synesthesia where sound manifests as color, shape, and movement. It's not something I can fully explain, but it informs how I hear tonal imbalance, spatial relationships, and the overall shape of a mix in ways that go beyond the meters. For the engineers I work with, that shows up as feedback that points at specific frequencies, specific moments, and specific relationships between elements.
For over 12 years, I ran Mobtown Studios, an award-winning Baltimore recording studio which I co-founded. I pivoted to focus solely on mastering, designing and building a dedicated mastering studio in 2018, where I work as a mastering engineer for producers, mix engineers, and labels worldwide. As a former artist, producer, studio owner, and mix engineer, I've stood on all sides of the glass. I understand what you're aiming for, and what it takes to get there, because I've been in your shoes. That's also why I'm glad to look at a mix before it comes to me, if you want a second set of ears before committing.
Beyond mastering, I occasionally work with iZotope, Native Instruments, Plugin Alliance, Tone Projects, Samply, and Steinberg (WaveLab Pro) on their software development, and I've previously worked with Warner Bros. Records, Discovery Channel, The Kennedy Center, and DC101-FM. In 2023, I co-created the Speaks Volumes podcast with mastering engineer Dan Coutant, where we talk about supporting our fellow engineers, work/life balance, and maintaining good mental health in a stressful and competitive industry. For more on my process and approach, here are a few interviews and podcasts I’ve been featured on.
When not working in music, I love making egg creams and listening to Prince.
